AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped)

​The Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program provides financial and health-related assistance to eligible adults with a disability. The disability must be permanent and substantially limit the person’s ability to earn a living. AISH clients may also be eligible to receive supplemental assistance (a child benefit and personal benefits) through the AISH program.

AJ's Loan Cupboard

A private, charitable socierty that loans out various types of medical equipment to residents in the community. ​

Alberta Aids to Daily Living

​Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) assists Albertans with a long-term disability, chronic illness or terminal illness, in maintaining independence in their community. AADL provides funding for basic medical equipment and supplies to meet clinically assessed needs*.

* Note: An assessment by a health care professional determines the equipment and supplies that an Albertan can receive through the AADL program.


AADL is a cost-share program. Albertans pay 25% of the benefit cost to a maximum of $500 per individual or family per year. Low-income Albertans and people receiving income assistance do not pay the cost-sharing portion.

Brooks Regional Transportation Service

Weekly transportation service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for residents of the Brooks Region to Medicine Hat (statutory holidays are excluded). Priority will be given to individuals in need of medical services within Medicine Hat. Applications must be submitted and approved prior to using the service (see below for application).

Bus leaves and arrives at the JBS Canada Centre located at 323 1st Street East, Brooks, AB (main entrance to the facility). Bus leaves at 8:00 a.m. from Brooks to Medicine Hat, and leaves Medicine Hat at 3:00 p.m. arriving in Brooks at or around 4:00 p.m.

Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB)

Our dedicated specialists provide a wide range of programs and services Canadians need to see beyond vision loss, build their independence and lead the lives they want.  

We can help with vision loss rehabilitation, emotional support, programs to help you stay active and independent, or the chance to connect with others who are living with sight loss.  

The CNIB hosts an informal support group at the Medicine Hat Public Library the 3rd Thursday of the month (not in July or Aug) starting around 1pm. Transportation can be provided; please call 403-527-2211 to arrange.


Specialized Technical Equipment Program (STEP)

STEP provides assistive technology for home use to Albertans with significant vision loss. 

The program requires you to contribute 25 per cent of the cost of any equipment you receive, up to a maximum of $500, unless you are low income or receiving assistance.

To be eligible for STEP, you must be registered with CNIB, a resident of Alberta, be covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, and unable to obtain funding from another source. Degree of vision loss is also a factor; we must have a copy of your current eye report.

Please note:

If you are deafblind, there is specialized equipment available to you. Applicants seeking to replace or duplicate working equipment they already own are not eligible. Application deadlines are May 31, September 30, and January 15.​

Children's Allied Health (Formerly CHADS)

Children's Allied Health offers skill-building, assessment, and treatment activities for the families of children who have or may develop emotional or behavioural problems, developmental delays, or disabilities.

Clients under the age of 65 are assessed on an individual basis. The team provides assessment, counseling, treatment and education to clients with complex health needs living in the community. Medicine Hat Public Library Homebound Services

Homebound Services links volunteers with clients to ensure that everyone has library access. Clients can use homebound services either indefinitely or on a short-term basis.

Our Homebound Services Program uses volunteers to deliver books and provide a voluntary reader service to extended care facilities, where volunteers read to patients. In addition, this service provides deposit collections for nursing and long-term care homes within Medicine Hat.

Next Step Residential

Persons With Developmental Disabilities

Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) helps adults with developmental disabilities get services to live as independently as possible in their community.

A PDD worker will help with creating an Outcome Plan and Individual Support Plan, as well as regularly reviewing your needs and updating your plans as needed.


You may access one or more of these services based on your Individual Support Plan:

-home living supports that help you do daily activities like banking, caring for your home, making meals or laundry

-respite services to give your caregivers a break when you live with them fulltime

-community access supports that help you take part in activities so you can learn, develop, relax, have fun or be with others

-employment supports to learn new skills and find and keep a paid job

-short-term support or training to give your caregivers extra help when things are difficult

-specialized supports from experts to help if you have additional needs because of mental illness, behavioural issues, addictions and/or involvement with the law

​Philips Lifeline is an easy-to-use personal response service that lets you summon help any time of the day or night - even if you can't speak. All you have to do is press your Personal Help Button, worn on a wristband or pendant, and a trained Personal Response Associate will ensure you get help fast.


Philips Lifeline now offers GoSafe a medical alert system that gives you the freedom to go where you want when you want. For patients without a landline, all services are available with a wireless communicator.


The Philips Medication Dispensing Service helps you to avoid medication mistakes so you can live independently in the comfort of your own home with through using our 24-hour automated medication dispenser.

​Low income Albertans with mobility challenges can apply for grants to modify their home.

Social Work Services - AHS

Provides psychosocial service, support, and resource information for people in hospital, outpatient programs, and some community care and supported living facilities.

Provides support and resources to promote physical and mental well-being, while also addressing social needs. Helps clients who run into problems because of illness, disability, and/or hospitalization, which may interfere with their being able to get the most benefit from their medical treatment.


Clients are primarily registered as inpatients in an AHS facility or program, but walk-ins are accepted as staff are available.  Walk-in clients do not necessarily require previous AHS involvement. There is usually a 24 to 48 hour wait for people in the hospital. Others may have to wait up to 2 weeks depending on the community and services needed.

The pain clinic is a modern specialist practice of managing chronic diseases which generate pain complaints in patients.

 

Physician Referral Process - Full consultative request with accompanying records. This request would be for a patient seeking a consult and stabilization for a complex case.

 

Minor consultative request for specific procedures (ex. marijuana RX or a senior needing joint relief) - when referring please specify these patients.

 

Patients can self refer for: cold laser for pain, prolo-therapy, focused shock wave, smoking cessation & platelet rich plasma for joint injection or tendonitis.

Living Fit Program 
The Living Fit program provides safe, supportive, barrier-free health and wellness opportunities for people with disabilities and chronic, stable conditions. 

The program aids individuals with: Multiple Sclerosis, Cognitive Disabilities, Spinal Cord Injuries, Brain Injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Fibromyalgia, Stroke, Heart Disease, Diabetes.

They can customize a program for such issues as Fall Prevention working on balance and leg strength. Participants must be YMCA members. The YMCA also offers financial assistance to those in need

Young Moms Program
The YMCA Early Intervention Program for Young Mothers, “Young Moms” is a comprehensive, educational program designed to meet the diverse needs of pregnant or parenting teens. Young moms can complete their high school education through independent study while learning life management skills. The program is conveniently located within a YMCA daycare centre which provides an opportunity for children to receive on-site care while moms are attending school.
