AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped)

​The Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program provides financial and health-related assistance to eligible adults with a disability. The disability must be permanent and substantially limit the person’s ability to earn a living. AISH clients may also be eligible to receive supplemental assistance (a child benefit and personal benefits) through the AISH program.

AJ's Loan Cupboard

A private, charitable socierty that loans out various types of medical equipment to residents in the community. ​

Alberta Aids to Daily Living

​Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) assists Albertans with a long-term disability, chronic illness or terminal illness, in maintaining independence in their community. AADL provides funding for basic medical equipment and supplies to meet clinically assessed needs*.

* Note: An assessment by a health care professional determines the equipment and supplies that an Albertan can receive through the AADL program.

Albertans pay 25% of the benefit cost to a maximum of $500 per individual or family per year. Low-income Albertans and those receiving income assistance are exempt from paying the cost-sharing portion.

Children's Health and Developmental Services (CHADS)

CHADS offers s kill-building, s upport and treatment for the families of children who have developmental delays, disabilities or emotional behavioural concerns.

Children's Health and Developmental Services (CHADS) serves Southeastern Alberta, including Medicine Hat, Brooks, Bow Island, Bassano, & Oyen. This program is offered free of charge through Alberta Health Services.

Families may self-refer. For third party referrals, parent/legal guardian must be aware of and give permission for referral.


The CHADS core team includes:

Behavioural Services
  • Provides consultation services to parents of children with behavioural needs in one setting; Parent Support Groups & Children’s Treatment Groups focusing on addressing anxiety, anger and parental divorce issues; Monthly Sleep Seminars; Referral Services.
  • Open referral for children age 7 years and under.



Home Based Development (HBD):
  • Provides screening and treatment for children with developmental delays, disabilities and/or premature births. 
  • Open referral birth to 3.5 years of age.


Occupational Therapy (OT):
  • Focuses on the assessment and intervention for fine motor, visual-motor, perceptual, sensory-motor, self-care and play skills. Concerns may be a result of neurological or musculoskeletal conditions, developmental delay or sensory-motor processing difficulties.
  • Open referral for children birth to 18 years of age.


Physiotherapy (PT):
  • Focuses on gross motor skills including posture, balance, coordination and the effect of muscles and joints on these skills.
  • Open referral for children birth to 18 years old of age.


Nutrition/Registered Dietitian (RD):
  • Focuses on any nutrition, growth, or feeding concerns. This includes assessing a child's diet for adequate nutrition, monitoring height and weight, and providing education on introducing solids and new textures of foods, picky eating, food allergies or intolerances, general healthy eating and special diets such as vegetarian or gluten free.
  • Open referral for children birth to 18 years of age.


Social Work:
  • Provides assessment of need and urgency and provides parents seeking referral with information along with case management, transition planning, prevention, promotion and counseling regarding clinical and support services. Consults and collaborates with the CHADS team, along with community agencies to ensure that the child and family receive the most appropriate service available in response to parent priorities and goals for their child.


Speech-Language Therapy (SLP):
  • Focuses on the assessment and treatment of children for communication and feeding development. This includes pre-speech, early language, speech sound production, speech generating communication devices, use of picture symbol communication, sign language use, fluency (stuttering), oral motor, chewing, sucking and swallowing development.
  • Open referral for children birth to 18 years of age.


Pediatric Medical Adviser:
  • Consults with CHADS team.

CPP Disability Benefits

​The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability benefit is a taxable monthly payment that is available to people who have contributed to the CPP and who are not able to work regularly at any job because of a disability.

Extended Family Services

​Non-medical companion & support care services. Services can be accessed In-Home, in Supported Living/Long Term Care, or temporarily while recovering from illness or injury.

Services include companionship, help with housework, shopping, attending appointments or events, assistance completing paperwork, ensuring medications are taken regularly, and more.

Geriatric Assessment Team

Clients age 65 and older with health problems related to getting older. Clients under the age of 65 are assessed on an individual basis. The team provides assessment, counseling, treatment and education to clients with complex health needs living in the community. When necessary, referrals may be made to other community agencies.

Provides a healthcare team approach to assess and treat people who need total joint replacement surgery. The first appointment (assessment) is with an orthopedic surgeon. The program will continue to follow your progress until after your surgery.

​The Medicine Hat Family YMCA, a charity supported by volunteers, is devoted to enriching our community by providing services to people of all ages within a safe, healthy environment that enhances personal wellness.


The YMCA now has a  Living Fit Program for people with disabilities, chronic conditions, and those at risk for disease (diabetes, hypertension, ect.).

They can customize a program for such issues as Fall Prevention working in balance and leg strength. No referral is required but participants must be YMCA members. The YMCA also offers financial assistance to those in need.

​A delivery service to those who are unable to come to the Library, either indefinitely or on a short-term basis, for example, while recovering from illness or surgery.

The Homebound Services Program uses volunteers to deliver books and provide a voluntary reader service to extended care facilities, where volunteers read to patients. In addition, this service provides deposit collections for nursing and long-term care homes within Medicine Hat.

​PDD funds programs and services to help adult Albertans with developmental disabilities to be a part of their communities and live as independently as they can.


Community Living Supports help individuals in their home (for example: meal planning and housekeeping)

Employment Supports train, educate and support individuals to get and keep jobs


Community Access Supports help individuals participate in their community (for example: volunteering, going to clubs, sports and other activities)

Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP)

​RAMP is a program available to eligible wheelchair users to modify their home to be more wheelchair accessible. Applicants can apply for a RAMP grant for up to $7,500 annually and up to a maximum of $15,000 within a 10-year benefit period
